Keep Improving

  • Great schools
    • Parents have a choice of where to send their children to school, whether that choice is private school, charter school, homeschool, or moving to the suburbs.  Sue wants HISD schools to be the first choice for families, and attract back those who have left, by supporting high-quality educational programs, enrichments, and supports that serve the diverse needs and interests of our students and families.
  • Excellent Teachers
    • There is nothing more important to the education of a child than having a high-quality teacher in their classroom every day.  Sue will continue to prioritize effective policies and practices to recruit, support, and retain excellent teachers, including compensation that values the important role our teachers have in the growth of our children and is competitive with surrounding districts.
  • Global Graduate
    • Children need to be able to do more than pass a standardized test.  Sue will continue to support the tenets of the Global Graduate profile so our students are leaders, skilled communicators, critical thinkers, and ready for college or to enter the career of their choice when they graduate from high school
  • Fiscal Stewardship
    • A district’s budget is a living document of its priorities.  Sue will use her expertise and experience in education finance to continue to fight to make sure every dollar is spent for the maximum benefit of students, that the budget is aligned with the district’s goals, and that more dollars are allocated directly to the schools.
  • Special Education
    • Sue will continue to prioritize the improvement of education for our students with disabilities by holding the administration accountable to achieving the goals the board developed in 2020.
  • COVID Learning Recovery
    • The most pressing issue confronting our children right now is the learning disruptions caused by COVID. Data at both the local and national level tells us that students have fallen behind in key areas such as literacy and college/career readiness. Sue will ensure that our federal ESSER dollars are focused on identifying the gaps in students’ unfinished learning from the past two years and are invested in evidenced-based practices to accelerate learning and get our students back on track.
  • Early Learning
    • Our littlest learners who do not have access to preschool opportunities start kindergarten behind their peers. Sue will continue to prioritize the expansion of high-quality PreK in HISD so allchildren can be kinder ready.
  • Robust Governance
    • Under Sue’s leadership as board President 2020, the board established Board Operating Procedures to standardize the way the board conducts its business, including increasing public transparency. This reflects a fresh commitment by to improve district governance, work as a team with the new permanent superintendent we hired, and begin a new chapter of Houston ISD excellence.
